Write job posts that pull applicants, run the same fair interview every time, and score ride-alongs. AI drafts and you decide.

The short answerUse AI to draft the paperwork side of hiring: a specific job post with real pay and schedule, a structured interview with the same questions for every candidate, and a ride-along scorecard. Have people make the decisions. Don't let AI screen out candidates automatically, and check that your posts follow pay-transparency and anti-discrimination rules in your state.

You'll need: Your pay range, schedule, benefits, required licenses/certifications, and a description of a typical day

Step 1: Gather the real facts

Before using AI, write down the pay range, schedule and on-call rotation, truck and tool policy, benefits, required licenses and certifications, and what a typical day looks like. AI will make up generic perks if you don’t give it facts.

Step 2: Draft the job post

Write a job post for a [Service Technician / Installer / Apprentice] at [Company], a [size] [trade] company in [city].
Facts: [paste]. Write like an owner talking to a tech, not HR. Structure: 2-sentence hook about the team, what you'll do (5 bullets), what you need (only the requirements I list), pay and benefits (exact), how to apply (simple). Under 350 words. Don't add anything I didn't provide.

Check the post for:

  • A pay range, if your state or city requires it
  • No age, gender, or other protected-class preferences (“young,” “energetic guys”)
  • Requirements that are actually job-related

Step 4: Build a structured interview

Create a 30-minute structured interview for this role with 8 questions: 3 technical (based on [systems you service]), 3 behavioral (customer interaction, safety, teamwork), 2 about logistics. For each, give what a strong answer includes and a 1-5 scoring guide. No questions about age, family, religion, health, national origin, or other protected characteristics.

Ask every candidate the same questions and score them right after the interview.

Step 5: Create a ride-along scorecard

Ask AI for a one-page scorecard covering safety habits, diagnostic process, communication with the homeowner, cleanliness, and paperwork. Use it for paid working interviews if you do them, and check wage-and-hour rules before you do.

Step 6: Keep decisions human

AI drafts and people decide. Keep notes from your scorecards, which helps you hire consistently and defensibly.

FAQ

Can I use AI to screen resumes automatically?

Be careful. Automated screening can create discrimination risk under federal and state law, and some jurisdictions regulate automated hiring tools. Use AI to organize information and have a person decide.

Do I have to list pay in the job post?

Several states and cities require it. In California, employers with 15 or more employees must include a pay scale in job postings (Labor Code 432.3, per the Labor Commissioner FAQ). Check your state's rules.

What certifications should I list?

List only what the role actually needs, like EPA Section 608 certification for HVAC refrigerant work or your state's license requirements. Over-requiring shrinks your candidate pool.
