Why EV quotes stall
Homeowners think an EV charger is “just an outlet.” Then the electrician finds a full panel, a 60-foot run, or a detached garage. The fix is getting the facts before the truck rolls and explaining them in plain English. The DOE’s home charging page is a good link to send homeowners who are new to Level 1 vs Level 2.
Step 1: Collect photos before the visit
Text this to every EV lead:
“Thanks for reaching out about a charger! To quote accurately, could you text: (1) a photo of your electrical panel with the door open, (2) the panel label, (3) where you want the charger, and (4) which charger you have or plan to buy? Thanks — [Name], [Company]”
Many quotes can be scoped from these photos plus a short visit.
Step 2: Check panel capacity
On site, confirm service size, open spaces, and existing loads. Run the load calculation required by the NEC edition your jurisdiction uses. If capacity is tight, note it now. That’s what drives the option you’ll offer.
Step 3: Scope the circuit and run
Record:
- Charger’s required circuit size (from the manufacturer’s install manual).
- Distance and route from panel to charger location.
- Wall, attic, conduit, or trenching work.
- Indoor vs outdoor rating and mounting.
- Whether the homeowner supplies the charger or you do.
Step 4: Handle permit and inspection
Put it on every quote:
“This installation requires a permit and inspection from [jurisdiction]. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection. Your install date depends on permit approval, and we’ll confirm it as soon as it’s issued.”
Step 5: Build good-better-best options
- Good: Dedicated circuit for a homeowner-supplied Level 2 charger at the closest practical location, permit included.
- Better: Supplied ENERGY STAR certified charger, cleaner run (conduit or concealed), and setup help with the charger’s app.
- Best: Better, plus load management or a panel upgrade where capacity requires it, and a second-vehicle-ready plan.
Use this AI prompt for the homeowner write-up (no names or addresses):
Write a homeowner-friendly EV charger quote from an electrical contractor. Use only these notes: [notes] and these three options with prices: [tiers]. Explain each in two sentences. Do not add incentive amounts, load calculations, or code requirements not in my notes.
Step 6: Use accurate incentive language
Incentives change, and stale dollar amounts on a quote become your problem. Use this instead:
“You may qualify for utility or federal incentives. Programs change often. Please check [utility link] and the IRS refueling property credit page before relying on any incentive. We’re happy to provide the invoice details you need.”
Step 7: Follow up
Same-day send, then a day-2 check-in. Many buyers are waiting on their vehicle delivery date, so ask: “When does the car arrive? We’ll schedule around it.” Then use the estimate follow-up sequence.
Common mistakes
- Quoting by phone without seeing the panel.
- Putting incentive dollar amounts on the quote.
- Skipping the load calculation because “it’s just a charger.”
- Ignoring the manufacturer’s install manual.

FAQ
How much does EV charger installation cost?
It depends on panel capacity, circuit size, distance from the panel, wall and trenching work, and permit fees. We don't publish national averages. Price from your own completed installs.
Are there tax credits for home EV chargers?
Federal and utility incentives have changed and can end. As of October 2026, check the IRS page for the alternative fuel vehicle refueling property credit and your utility's site before mentioning any incentive, and never put a dollar amount on the quote unless you verified it that week.
What if the panel can't handle a charger?
Options include a lower-amperage circuit, a load-management device where your jurisdiction allows it, or a panel/service upgrade. See our panel upgrade quoting guide.
