A no-hype checklist for picking field service software based on your shop size and the automations you'll actually use.

Last verified · For HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Roofing · 6 steps

The short answerDecide based on shop size and the workflows you'll actually automate, not on AI marketing. Jobber and Housecall Pro are generally aimed at small and growing shops and publish plan pricing. ServiceTitan is built for larger, multi-tech operations, uses quote-based pricing, and takes longer to implement. Trial the finalists against your own checklist: booking, dispatch, quotes, follow-ups, reviews, invoicing, payments, and accounting sync.

You'll need: A list of your must-have workflows, your tech count, and your accounting software

Step 1: Write your must-have list

Score each item 1 (nice) to 3 (must) for your shop:

WorkflowYour score
Online booking and missed-call text-back
Dispatch board and tech mobile app
Quotes with good-better-best options and automatic follow-ups
Automated review requests
Invoicing, card/ACH payments, financing
Price book / flat-rate pricing
Memberships / maintenance agreements
QuickBooks or other accounting sync
Reporting (close rate, revenue per tech)
AI features (call answering, summaries, writing help)

Step 2: Match by shop size

  • Solo to small crews: start with Jobber and Housecall Pro. Both publish plan tiers, so compare which features are in which tier. affiliate link placeholder
  • Larger, multi-truck shops with dispatch and memberships: look at ServiceTitan as well, which uses quote-based pricing and involves a formal implementation. affiliate link placeholder

These are general positioning notes from each vendor’s own marketing. Check the vendor pages for current details.

Step 3: Check the AI and automation features you’ll use

For each finalist, find out which plan includes the features on your must-have list. Many automations are limited to higher tiers. Record the plan name and price from the pricing page, with the date you checked.

Step 4: Run trials with real jobs

Put a week of real (or realistic) jobs through each trial, from booking through quote, follow-up, job, invoice, payment, and review request. Have one tech use the mobile app. Note where each one slows you down.

Step 5: Check data export and contract terms

Ask each vendor:

  • Can I export all customers, jobs, invoices, and price book items to CSV?
  • What’s the contract length, and what does it cost to cancel early?
  • Are there onboarding fees or payment processing rates?

Step 6: Decide and plan migration

Pick a go-live date in a slower season. Import customers first, then the price book, then turn on automations one at a time. Start with review requests and estimate follow-ups, which are covered in our review guide and follow-up guide.

FAQ

Which one has the best AI?

All three are adding AI features quickly, and the lists change often. Judge by whether a feature handles one of your actual workflows during the trial, not by the feature list.

Can I switch later?

Yes, but migration takes time. Before signing, confirm you can export customers, jobs, and invoices, and check contract length and cancellation terms.

Do you earn money from these vendors?

Not yet. We may join their referral programs in the future, and we'll disclose it. See our affiliate disclosure. It won't change this framework.
